Isle of Wight Libraries partnership

Not everyone has the internet at home. That shouldn’t stop anyone hearing the voices of the people who worked at the Ronson factory in Newport.

Discover More CIC is working with Isle of Wight Library Service so that anyone can listen to the Flame Keepers interviews, read the transcripts and browse the photographs for free, at their local library.

How to listen

  • Every Isle of Wight library has computers you can use free of charge.
  • To use one, you’ll need to be a library member or show some ID. Joining the library is free.
  • Go to flamekeepers.uk and choose an interview. You can listen to the full recording, read along with the transcript and look through the historic photographs.
  • Take a pair of headphones if you have them.
  • If you’re not sure where to start, just ask a member of staff. They will be happy to help.

Look out for our postcards
Flame Keepers postcards are going out to all 11 of the Island’s libraries, and they’ll sit beside the public computers.

Take one for yourself, or for someone you know who worked at Ronson.

We’ve also given library staff an information sheet about the project, so they can tell visitors about it and help them find the interviews.

Why libraries?
Many of the people who worked at Ronson between the 1960s and 80s, and their families, are older Islanders.

Some of them don’t go online at home. Libraries are free, local and welcoming, and there’s one in most of the Island’s towns.

That makes them the right place to share these stories with everyone, not just people who are already online.

Living with sight loss? You can also hear the interviews through Sight for Wight.

Thank you
Our thanks go to Isle of Wight Library Service and their staff for helping Islanders discover the Flame Keepers stories.
