KS2 Local History Teachers' Resource Pack

Our free Key Stage 2 pack helps pupils investigate the factory’s story through the voices of five women who worked there, photographs lent by former workers and their families, newspaper reports, and a debate in Parliament.

What’s inside

  • A plan for five sessions, with learning objectives and quick checks
  • Background notes for teachers, a timeline and a map
  • Curriculum links, quoted from the national curriculum
  • A vocabulary sheet of factory words
  • Ten historic images with questions
  • Fifteen short audio clips from our oral history interviews, with start and end times
  • Five activities with printable sheets and teacher guides

Who it’s for?
The pack is written for Key Stage 2 and works best with Years 5 and 6. Every activity except Activity 5 includes a note on adapting it for Years 3 and 4.

It supports a local history study and links to English, maths, geography and PSHE.

Before you teach
The audio clips come from full-length interviews recorded with adults, which are unedited.

Please listen to each clip before playing it in class, and stop at the end time shown in the pack. You’ll find all the interviews on this website.

Using the pack
You’re welcome to print, copy and share the pack for non-commercial teaching, with credit. It is licensed under Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.

You may also adapt the activity sheets for your own pupils, for example by enlarging them or simplifying the wording, but please don’t publish or share adapted versions.

Tell us how you used it
If you’ve used the pack, we’d love to hear how it went. The short form takes about three minutes, and your answers help us improve the pack and show the difference local heritage makes in Island classrooms.
